That was back then, but knowing what I know now, I would have told him to get professional help immediately. Yes, as friends we tend to give some bad advice (unintentionally) and we all want to seem like experts (even in ways to save a marriage).
Would you trust your friend to perform open-heart surgery on a dying man, or leave it to the professionals? Then why would you risk your marriage?
Fact is, saving a marriage requires a great deal more of tact and knowledge than some of us are led to believe.
